For some reason they never stopped being special to me in my heart despite wholely ignoring them now unless I'm blasting them for wandering into my crop fields.

(As Maelos pointed out) the shooting may be the result of two groups of traders who are hostile to each other, but find the others' newly-acquired-but-forsaken Chinchillas.
